How the Patina Projects Course works

This is an online course in the Art of Patina and we have students from all over the globe.

The 7 Projects

The course consists of 7 modules. The 7 modules will act as your course material. In each module, you will find recipes, techniques, important info and videos. In most other paint finish courses, students make small sample boards which they can't really do much with afterwards. In this course, we offer our students a project to complete in each module. Each project has its own easy step-by-step instructions and tutorial videos.  So, by the end of each Module, a beautiful piece has been created. Students love the fact that they have something to show for their efforts.

Support and Time Limits

You can start whenever it suits you. There is no set time in which to complete a module. Most of our students have jobs or other commitments and only do this part time. You will receive 12 months online support and easy step-by-step instructions and videos. The videos can be replayed as often as you like and there is no limit to the number of questions you may ask. We make use of an online text chat facility on the course site to communicate with students. Students work at their own pace and when it suits them. No classes that can be missed. No exams and tests to study for or time limits for handing in projects. We try to be as flexible as possible as we want this to be a positive and enjoyable experience for students. We don't like students to feel pressured when they do this course. We all have enough of that in our lives. This is for relaxing, having fun and broadening your knowledge and skills.

Skills Level

We have designed the course with beginners in mind. You do not need experience in painting and carpentry. Every module has an overview, a material and tools list and instructions with videos. You will build your upcycling skills as you progress through the modules and complete your projects.
In this course, students also learn to make their own paints, stain, sealer, primer, gesso, ornaments to apply to mirrors as well as moulds in which to reproduce ornaments. No expensive branded ready-made products are used. We go back to the basics and teach students the methods and recipes that artisans used through the ages to produce the antiques we now drool over.

The ingredients for making your own paints, stains, etc. are all very basic and are mostly available from hardware stores and supermarkets. Some of which you may already have in the kitchen. There are only a few items, like powder colour pigments and pine rosin, that you may have to get from an art supplier or order online. We can point you in the right direction.

The Outcome

At the end of the 7 modules you will know how to:

  • make 4 different kinds of paints, wood stain and sealer, using age old recipes
  • learn the basics of mixing paint colours

Our mission is to make the subject as exciting and enjoyable as possible. We want you to start something that will stay part of your life. For this reason, we concentrate on the creative side rather than the technical side. From the start, you can make beautiful objects for your home to treasure forever and inspire you to create more.
