Patina PROJECTS Course

Everything you need to know about this course.

What will I be doing in the Patina PROJECTS Course?

This course consists of 7 modules. In each module, you can make an object like an icon, clock face, mirror frame, etc. In this course, unlike in most other paint finish courses, instead of making a little sample board, you make an object while learning different techniques. Students love the fact that they have something to show for their efforts. This course will give you a good feel for the various paints and how to use them on different pieces. You will do a bit of basic woodwork which can prove to be handy if you need to up-cycle a piece. You will also learn how to make gesso for low-relief ornamentation and how to make ornaments for application to mirrors as well as moulds in which to reproduce ornaments. There is also a section on ageing mirror glass.

Which processes are used to create these decor objects?

With the help of step-by-step videos and instructions we will teach you how to make or prepare the structure of each object, how to apply the different homemade products and finally how to distress them to look authentically old.

In this module, you will learn the invaluable skill to assess colours and understand how they work when mixed together. You will also learn how to make your own carbon paper, wood stain, casein paint, water colours and sealers. All of which are applied on board to create a colour wheel, based on one from a 300-year-old book and of which the colours have degraded over time. Finally, we will show you how to distress and add extra patina to your colour wheel for it to look authentically old and faded like the original.

  • 2

In this Module you will learn how to make wood stain and oil paints from natural products, using original old recipes. You will also learn to make a basic casein gesso and how to apply and prepare it for the transfer of the image. In the process of trying out these recipes and the techniques featured in our videos, you will incidentally be making an oil on board icon of Archangel Michael in the Byzantine style.

  • 3

In this module you will learn how to make wood stain and casein paint from natural products, using original old recipes, and learn how to apply these in order to get the desired end result. You will also learn how to transfer images and patterns onto a casein painted surface and finally, you will learn how to distress and treat this surface for it to look authentically old and chipped. While you are experimenting with all of this, you will be making a lovely clock face.

  • 4

In this Module, you will learn how to make tempera from natural products, using original old recipes and how to apply it using a grisaille method. You will also learn how to make a wooden cut-out from our template, using a jigsaw and how to prepare the surface for the tempera and the transferring of the provided image. Our videos and instructions will guide you and we will be there all the way with online support in order for you to finish your exercise while making a beautiful wall plaque.

  • 5

In this module, you will learn how to up-cycle an old picture frame by applying some basic woodwork skills from our video. These skills will also prove to be valuable in the next exercise. You will also learn how to apply casein paint in order for it to look like tarnished dark grey metal. The result, a small metal looking display or specimen case.

  • 6

In this module, you will expand your woodworking skills a little further by making your own frame and creating low relief decorations on it. You will also learn how to make, apply and distress Gesso and red and gold tempera to look like antique gilding. There is also the added option of distressing modern mirror glass to resemble old tarnished mirror. The result here is a small Italian Style Frame with beautiful low relief decoration, finished in gold with a rich patina.

  • 7

In this module, you will expand your woodworking skills even further and learn how to produce moulds for reproducing decorative mouldings and how to age mirror glass. You will also learn how to apply and distress casein paint in such a way that it will have a flaky finish. At the end of this Module, you will be the proud owner of a beautiful over-mantle Trumeau style mirror like the one in this image.

  • We give a lot of help with the trumeau. Yours will differ from ours and depends primarily on the accessibility and choice of ornaments. We use that as the starting point. Send us an image of your ornaments and the size of the finished product (if you have a specific size in mind) and we will help you design within those parameters. The construction will follow the design. If you do not have easy access to ornaments, we will suggest one’s to make yourself. The secret to ornament and mould making is choosing the appropriate material and method that will save both time and money.

Yes, all the finishes are done using paint you will make yourself.

What kind of paint is used in this course?

You do not need any experience at all. The course was designed with complete beginners in mind.

How do I know if the Patina PROJECTS Course is the right course for me?

We have designed this course with beginners in mind. You do not need experience in painting and carpentry. Every module has an overview, a materials and tools list, and instructions with videos. For someone who is new to painting and upcycling, using the old ways, or for someone wanting to perhaps restore old mirrors or painted antiques or even reproducing decorations and their moulds, this would be the place to start.

EXPERIENCE

What Students Say

Are these courses only in English?

The courses are presented in English. By that, we mean that all the text in the course is in English. The courses are broken up into lots of short step-by-step video clips. The videos are silent and all the written instructions for each video clip are below each video. That way it is easier for non-English speaking students to translate each bit of text in something like Google Translate.

My English is not very good. How would support work for me?

We have many foreign students with a very basic English. They sometimes send their questions in their own language. We then use Google Translate to translate it to English. We answer them in English and add Google’s version of the translated text too if it is necassary. It is not perfect and takes a little longer to communicate, but it works for us. They are all creating very beautiful patina this way.

LANGUAGE

Are the materials and tools that I need expensive?

All the materials are in a raw state. We do not use any branded materials. As a result, it works out a lot cheaper.

What are the materials I will need to make my own paint, stain, etc?

Once you’re signed up, you’ll have access to the shopping list and an explanation of each item, as well as where to shop at low prices if you do not already have it in your fridge, kitchen cupboard or workroom.
